First of all...here are some definitions frequently asked by our patients:

Eye Examinations:
Comprehensive evaluation of the patient's visual Acuity (including possible need for optical help e.g. glasses, contact lenses) and assessment of medical health of the eye. Should be done every one to two years.

Contact Lenses:
Small round, plastic disc inserted on the surface of the eye to correct refractive errors. Usually soft but can be hard.

Glaucoma:
Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) caused by excessive building of aquaeous humor in the eye, causing damage to the optic nerve (nerve of sight). Patients can lose vision slowly over the years and not be aware of it. Treatable with drops or occasional laser or surgery.

Lasers:
Laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Non-surgical, the use of powerful light to perform a variety of ocular procedures. A specialty of ours at Acuity Eye Care.

Cataracts:
A clouding of the eyes natural focusing lens, treated by surgical removal of the lens and simultaneous implantation of a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL).

Lens implants:
The most popular synthetic replacements for the eyes natural lens when a cataract has been removed. Available as single prescription and multifocal (array).

Lasik:
The most popular form of laser vision correction in the United states.

Laser Vision Correction:
Involves the use of a special beam of light to reshape the surface of the eye in order to correct refractive errors.
