DR. KLIEN

I am an ophthalmologist specializing in both medical and surgical diseases of the retina and macula.  This includes but is not limited to diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and detachment, macular degeneration, macular hole, retinal vein and artery occlusion, complications of cataract surgery, and inflammatory diseases affecting the posterior aspect of the eye.  In every case I work closely with my colleagues in Medicine, Rheumatology, Optometry and Endocrinology.  My goal is to offer state-of-the-art care and preventative treatment for patients facing the possibility of visual impairment in a comfortable, friendly and dignified environment. 

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of Pennsylvania in 1982.  I graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1986.   

While in medical school I spent summers studying with Nobel Prize winning cell biologists  Dr. George Paladi and Dr. Marilyn Farquahar in Romania and Dr. Eichi Yamada in Japan.  I became interested in ophthalmology while attending Grand Rounds presentations at Yale and my interest grew while working in the clinical laboratory of ocular histopathology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Institute.

I remained at Yale to complete a residency in Ophthalmology.  I was inspired to specialize in retina by the wonderful doctors in the Yale Eye Center.  I obtained additional fellowship training in both surgical and medical retina at Yale and at also the Retina Institute of Maryland.  I have published seven scientific papers in peer reviewed medical journals, one text book chapter and presented six scientific posters at major meetings. 

In 1992, I returned to Connecticut to build what is now a very successful retina practice with the support of the Danbury medical community.  Among the ophthalmology sub specialties, retina has the closest intellectual ties to medicine.  Many of the diseases affecting the retina are vascular or metabolic in origin.   Clear and frequent communication with primary care doctors, endocrinologists, rheumatologists and other specialists gives patients the best chance of success in preventing or correcting vision threatening problems.   

In recent years, the field of retina has benefited from new developments from the study of growth factors by cell biologists.  We now have not only laser treatments, but also medications for the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion.  In our Danbury office we offer Visudyne, Lucentis and Avastin for patients with wet macular degeneration.  We perform digital photography with angiography and optical coherence tomography in office.  These imaging techniques are painless they enable us to specifically identify microscopic abnormalities in the macula and to choose the safest and most effective treatment.
